Support. Reflection. Growth. Safety.

Supervision is an essential part of art therapy practice. It provides a confidential, reflective space where the therapist can explore their work, understand their responses, strengthen their clinical thinking, and ensure the client receives safe and ethical care.

Art therapy is relational work. We are present not only to the client’s emotions, stories, and creative expressions, but also to our own internal responses. Supervision helps us stay grounded, attuned, and connected to ourselves so we can be fully present with others.

Why Supervision Matters

1. Ensures Ethical and Safe PracticeSupervision helps the therapist consider what is best for the client and ensures practice is in line with professional, cultural, and ethical standards.

2. Supports the Therapist’s Emotional WellbeingTherapists hold space for others. Supervision provides space for the therapist to be supported, understood, and emotionally cared for.

3. Deepens Clinical InsightReflecting on sessions with a supervisor helps the therapist understand themes, patterns, defenses, emotional communication, and symbolic material in the artwork.

4. Helps Maintain BoundariesSupervision supports clarity around roles, expectations, professional relationships, and emotional boundaries.

5. Encourages Growth and ConfidenceIt provides ongoing learning, skill development, and creative replenishment. It keeps the work alive, curious, and evolving.

How Often Should Art Therapists Attend Supervision?

The frequency depends on the therapist’s level of experience, client load, and professional membership requirements.

Generally recommended:

  • Students and early-career therapists: Fortnightly or monthly supervision

  • Experienced therapists: Monthly supervision

  • Group supervision can be a helpful addition for shared learning and support

Professional associations (such as ANZACATA in Australia) require therapists to attend regular, ongoing supervision to maintain membership and professional registration.

Supervision is not something done only when challenges arise. It is a continuous, supportive part of being a reflective, present, and ethical therapist.

Supervision as Creative Practice

Just like art therapy, supervision can include art-making, imagery, journaling, and symbolic reflection. It can help the therapist reconnect with their own creativity, intuition, and inner grounding.

Supervision is not about evaluation. It is about being seen, supported, and accompanied in the work.

In Summary

Supervision helps art therapists:

  • provide ethical and safe care

  • understand their clients more deeply

  • maintain emotional balance and wellbeing

  • grow as practitioners

  • stay connected to creativity and meaning

A supported therapist can better support others.Supervision is how we care for the carers.
