Purpose:The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) is a self-report questionnaire commonly used in medical, psychological, and therapeutic settings to measure a person’s levels of anxiety and depression. It’s often used before starting a therapy program, including art therapy, to:
Assess baseline emotional state.
Identify individuals who may need additional support.
Track changes in mood over time as therapy progresses.
Structure:
14 items total
7 items assess anxiety (HADS-A)
7 items assess depression (HADS-D)
Each item is scored 0–3, giving a total score range of 0–21 for anxiety and depression separately.
Interpretation:
0–7: Normal
8–10: Borderline case
11–21: Clinical case / significant anxiety or depression
Use in Art Therapy:
Helps the therapist understand the emotional state of the participant before starting art therapy.
Provides a baseline to measure progress after sessions.
Can guide selection of interventions: for example, exercises to reduce anxiety, increase relaxation, or improve mood.
