Art Therapy Session: “Art That Stayed With Me”
Duration: 60–90 minutes
Purpose:To reflect on the artworks experienced at the art fair, explore emotional responses, reconnect with aesthetic preferences, and use art-making to express personal resonance.
1. Gentle Arrival (5 minutes)
Invite the client to settle into the space.
Short grounding:
Notice feet on the floor
Deep breaths
“Let the body soften and arrive”
2. Opening Conversation (10–15 minutes)
Use open, spacious questions:
What did you notice about yourself while walking through the art fair?
Was there a particular artwork that stayed with you? Why that one?
What colours, materials, or emotions stood out for you?
Did anything surprise you about your reactions?
Avoid judgment or art critique.Stay with felt sense rather than analysis. You might say:
“I’m curious what you felt, more than what you thought.”
3. Art-Making Prompt (30–40 minutes)
Prompt Title: “The Artwork That Stayed Inside Me”
Ask the client to create an artwork inspired by:
A piece that resonated with them
A moment of emotional response
A colour palette that felt meaningful
A composition that felt familiar or compelling
Let them choose materials:
Soft pastels
Gouache or tempera
Collage with magazines
Coloured pencils
Watercolour & ink
Important:This is not about copying the original artwork. It’s about expressing the inner response.
You might say:
“Let the artwork be a memory of a feeling rather than a picture of what you saw.”
4. Reflection (10–15 minutes)
Invite the client to speak from the artwork outward, not from their “thinking mind.”
Questions you may use:
What do you notice now, looking at what you created?
Where in the body do you feel this artwork?
If your artwork could speak, what might it say?
What part of yourself does this piece connect to?
Let silence be part of the process.
5. Closing (5 minutes)
Ask the client to choose one word that represents their experience of today’s session.
Gently transition back to the room.
You can say:
“Take a breath and notice your feet again. You are here. You are safe. You are enough.”
Therapeutic Aims
This session supports:
Self-awareness
Emotional regulation
Aesthetic identity development
Visual self-expression
Memory integration
Meaning-making & personal storytelling
Optional Group Variation
